About Me

Ryan Paull

M.A. Organizational Leadership

Hi, I’m Ryan. Previously a four-year 911 dispatcher and nine-year search & rescue tech / mission coordinator, I’m now in full-time ministry at Red Rocks Church, in Denver, Colorado. When I’m not working or writing for TRG, I love spending time outside! I’m an avid rock and ice climber, I love mountain biking, backpacking, and paddle boarding. I’m a huge leadership nerd, and love to learn new things.

I believe every single one of us is here on purpose, for a purpose; that leadership is for everyone; and at no fault of our own, not nearly enough of us discover our God-given purpose to lead and serve others through the incredible gifts we’ve been given. I want to change that!

Before I can tell my life what I want to do with it, I must listen to my life telling me who I am. I must listen for the truths and values at the heart of my own identity, not the standards by which I must live - but the standards by which I cannot help but live if I am living my own life.

Do you know who you are? Truly? Do you feel like you’re living the life you were meant for? Are you walking in the fullness of your purpose and calling? If you’re anything like me, the answer to all of those questions was a resounding “No!” for a substantial part of my life. But I want you to know it’s not your fault. Parker Palmer said it best, “From our first days in school, we are taught to listen to everything and everyone but ourselves.” We live in a world that teaches us that our worth and value in the world is directly linked to what we have to offer and how well we fit in. But those things never satisfy us do they? So what will sustain us? It was one commitment to myself and one simple act of kindness that changed my life and led me down this leadership path towards helping others live their purpose.

Discovering Purpose

So what does it take to discover your purpose and walk in the calling that God has for your life?  At the expense of writing a novel on my life up to this point, let me just share the three main things I learned during college that helped me discover my purpose and relentlessly pursue what set my soul on fire.

1) Value/Identity/Worth

The people and the things of this world will never sustain you, and you make an idol of them, they will destroy you. There is no relationship, no hobby, no title, and no amount of success that will ever be enough to make you feel like you matter. Your value, your worth, and your identity are found in who you are and whose you are – and no one can ever take that away from you. You will discover your value and worth in the world when you start to believe the things that God says about you.

2) Purpose

Aside from having a relationship with Jesus, Discovering your purpose, and learning how to walk in the fullness of your calling in service of others is the single most powerful thing that can change your life, the lives of people around you, and the world for the better. You might not believe what I’m about to say, and that’s okay. But I’m believing it for you. You are here on purpose, for a purpose. You are loved and you are enough exactly as you are. You were anointed with a calling, and you have been given gifts specifically tailored to help you steward your calling well. Don’t you dare let anyone tell you who you are, or what you need to do to belong in the world. The world doesn’t need you to be a certain way, work a certain job, or conform to the pressures of society. The world needs you to be you! And the only way we can bring Heaven to Earth is if we lean into who God created us to be.  There is an extraordinary purpose and calling on your life, and you will figure out what it is. I promise.

3) 1 Timothy 4:12

I’ll get to the verse, just bear with me for a moment. The two things that changed my life in college were that I 1) made a commitment to myself to say yes to an opportunity that the Lord placed in front of me, regardless of how scared I was. and 2) The kindness of a staff member taking five minutes out of their day to ask me what I was passionate about, and how he could help, changed my life. He gave me the opportunity to say yes to something I was wildly unqualified for, and certainly didn’t deserve.  I had no idea what I was doing, but he trusted me, he guided me, and he inspired me to work my butt off until I had a vision for something amazing that I could bring to life. Our world is obsessed with demanding we prove ourselves before we are worthy of holding a position or doing a job.  This isn’t biblical, especially when it comes to youth and young adult development. God equipped those He called, not the other way around – and we should too. Our truest self and greatest potential is found in the mystery and adventure seeking discomfort and leaning into His strength and guidance when we don’t know the answer. So to the teachers, coaches, mentors, and leaders – you can change a life and help someone reach their full potential by creating a space for someone to lean into something they might not be qualified for.  Now for the student reading this. When I was in college, I was listening to the radio and someone said, “Never let anyone think less of you because of your age, but more importantly, don’t give people a reason to.” Paul says the same thing in 1 Timothy 4:12,14. “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity…Do not neglect the gift you have.” Young adult, in everything you do, do it like it deeply matters. Do it with enthusiasm, with perseverance, with discipline, with love, with professionalism, and with great faith.

"A life lived with purpose is an invitation to embark on an extraordinary adventure in service of leading others, and our self well."

The best way to bring Heaven to Earth and create the world we’ve all dreamed of living in is by helping as many people as possible walk in the fullness of their calling and purpose by developing a new generation teachers, coaches, mentors, and leaders who have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to help love teenagers and young adults into the best versions of themselves. If you are a teenager, young adult, teacher, coach, mentor, leader, manager, boss, or parent, check out my work and join our community.  Together we become the generation that changes everything.
